
You have to be willing to suck at something new
Apr 17, 2023I've learned so much this past year about myself. Starting my business as a health coach has really tested my courage and challenged my sense of "can I really do this?" or "who am I to do this?" like no other time in my life.
While I am continually digging into mind-set work in order to take the steps to move forward in my business, I continue to see the parallels to the work I am helping others do on THEIR journey of self-improvement and toward their goals.
I am realizing that the #1 biggest reason many of us struggle to reach our goals...or struggle to even START working on our goals whether it be personal, professional or health goals...is perfectionism.
Perfectionism holds us back from fully living our lives and becoming who we are meant to be. The thought of trying something new and failing IS scary. Even the thought of being just mediocre is scary to many of us who have high expectations of ourselves and want to EXCEL at this 'thing' that is so important to us.
Basically, we are afraid to suck at something new.
And I get it. It's hard to pull the trigger on something new because if it's new, we already KNOW that there will be a learning curve and we aren't going to be great at it. You risk failing. It is much safer and more comfortable to stay where you are at. But at what cost?
From my podcast to recording video posts, to hosting LIVE workshops and challenges, it has been terrifying. But the only way to get better at these things...and eventually get GOOD at these things is to JUST DO IT. To practice, and to be willing to suck for a while.
For me, I want so much to do this work on a full-time basis, to make a bigger impact...to connect with more women and help them to create a life that THEY love and they DESERVE! I know that I will only get there by taking the next step, no matter how scary.
What I am learning in this process, is that every time I challenge myself to do the next, scary thing....is that it gets easier. Not less scary...but easier to take the plunge because I am learning how fun & exciting it really is to challenge myself, and to overcome things I didn't think I was capable of doing...if this makes sense?
I am learning that life is about challenging yourself and GROWING!
No doubt we all have things we've wanted to try over the years and decided it was too risky. It's time to ask yourself HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT THIS? How much will you regret never even trying?
It takes courage to set new goals and to try new things. Maybe it's with your career, maybe you have a passion or an idea for a business that has always nagged at you.
Maybe it's YOU that needs work. Maybe you have lost your sense of self and no longer recognize the person in the mirror. Maybe you know that you deserve better for yourself and for your health. Maybe YOU are the project.
It's hard to put yourself out there and START this process. To start a fitness routine, to join a gym, join a challenge, join a new community....can be uncomfortable. There is a learning curve to implementing new habits in our lives, and it takes courage.
But the truth is no-one out there killed their first 5 episodes on their podcast. No great speaker ever got on stage and killed it the first time. Just like no person ever changed their eating habits or started out in fitness with perfect action. It takes practice.
It is NEVER an 'all forward moving' journey.
I know this to be true because I have lived it and I continue to struggle every day to make better choices and to prioritize MY health goals. But at first I had to start showing up for myself and PRACTICING being that person. Practice making better food choices, practice being more active. Finding the courage to join the class or to walk in to the gym the first time. I had to find the courage to make myself accountable in a way that really conveyed to the universe that THIS IS HAPPENING!
If you want something different for YOUR life, you have to just start. One piece of advice I heard that keeps me moving forward is DO IT MESSY! But just do it.
ANY action is better than no action.
What is ONE small step you can take today? I promise you that ANY action you take WILL create momentum.
Find the courage to be willing to suck at something new. It will change your life (and make it SO much more fun!) <3
