The Missing Piece

If I had to choose the BIGGEST LESSON I have learned in my journey of weight loss and self-improvement it is learning that you cannot hate your body back to better health.
 
You cannot be at war with your body and get healthy. I understand that there are people out there who are overweight and have healthy relationships with their body and themselves and I wish this for EVERYONE.
 
But I am talking to the women whose weight represents so much more.
 
Women whose weight represents inadequacy. It represents indecision and turmoil in other areas of their lives. It represents years of shame, guilt, sadness, loneliness, trauma. While many of these deeper emotional issues are out of my realm of expertise, I want to help you make peace with your body and end this cycle of disconnect. I have been there and it breaks my heart to see others stuck in this destructive cycle because I know how that feels.
 
First of all, you ARE your body. Your body is not separate from who you are. Your body, like your SELF deserves love, compassion, patience. All the things that as women, we show to one other. The unconditional love that we so easily give to our friends, our daughters, our mothers, our lovers. Why is it that we find it so hard to love ourselves this way? Why is it that we cannot see our OWN value?
 
Instead we choose to be so critical and demeaning of this body that is taking us through this journey of life. It has taken me the bigger part of my life to really get this. To realize all the amazing things my body has done and continues to do for me, no matter how neglectful I have been to it throughout my life.
 
Think of where your legs have taken you. The places you have traveled and needed to get to. Your arms that have held your babies and hugged your loved ones. We go as far as to criticize the changes in our bodies from bearing our children even after it miraculously grew our babies! Your body has been right there with you through the happiest and the most difficult times in your life and never let you down.
 
For me, this was the missing piece. To get to that place of gratitude toward my body and all it's resilience and imperfections. I had to make peace with my whole SELF.
 
Unfortunately for many of us we have spent our lifetime being critical of our physical self, and it is deeply rooted. There isn't a switch that we can just 'turn off' this destructive internal dialog.
 
Sadly this includes holding on to criticism from other people. We internalize the negative things that people tell us and make that become OUR truth. Why is it that we question the good things people tell us about ourselves but believe the bad things without question?
 
The good news is that this CAN change. When you start down this road of self-care, I promise you it will create a shift in your mind-set. The momentum and the gratitude that grows when you begin to honor and care for your body is amazing.
 
I still catch myself being critical of my body at times, but the difference is that I now feel compassion and acceptance for myself and my flaws. I am grateful for my health, my mobility, my entire SELF! I know that I don't have to look a certain way to be worthy of love. I feel confident and proud of who I am.
 
For those of you who are dealing with obesity, this process starts by shedding the weight you have buried yourself under for so long. Losing that protective barrier that you have carefully, unknowingly built around yourself.
 
You will be truly be amazed how quickly your mind-set shifts when you begin down this path of self-care. It begins by making small commitments to your SELF, setting small goals. Prioritizing and honoring these commitments to yourself. You will begin to feel worthy of all the efforts and changes you start to make in your life, and I can promise you, you will want more.
 
I have been successful in overcoming obesity and continue every day to honor my body and work toward self-improvement in all areas of my life. I now have the privilege of supporting others in this amazing transformation that I KNOW YOU are capable of also.
